Ukraine: Moment camera operator runs for safety during shelling in Donetsk
Point-of-view footage shows the moment a camera operator had to run for cover during what a Russian official said was Ukrainian shelling on Russian-controlled Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on Saturday, 5 August. The camera was following firefighters as they approached a university building in the city, which was burning after what Russian-installed mayor Alexei Kulemzin called a Ukrainian attack. Moments later, a loud blast is heard and the camera operator runs away whilst crouching down. Kulemzin said initial reports indicated the cause of the fire was an attack by Ukrainian forces using cluster munitions - this has not been independently verified.

Ukraine removes Soviet emblem from Kyiv’s Motherland Monument
Workers removed a Soviet emblem from the shield of the “Motherland” monument in Kyiv, Ukraine. Created by Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich in 1981, the original monument featured a hammer and sickle, which were taken down on Tuesday, 1 August at a compound of the World War II museum in the capital city. They will be replaced by a tryzub, a three-pronged emblem of Ukraine, in time for the country’s Independence Day on 24 August. Yuriy Savchuk, director of the Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II, said: “This is the moment that millions of Ukrainians, generations of Ukrainians have dreamed about.”

Educational facilities, including a dormitory, were destroyed in Russian drone attacks in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Tuesday, 1 August. Footage released by Ukrainian officials shows a bombed building on fire and firefighters tackling the blaze. One person was injured after a drone hit an empty dormitory building and another three struck a sports facility in a night-time attack, the service said. According to president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Russia attacked the city with five Shahed drones.

Authorities in Italy have released drone footage said to show a suspected arsonist in action in the Calabria region, as firefighters continue to battle wildfires across the south. Searing temperatures have scorched Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria, where dozens of fires have broken out and multiple evacuations have been ordered. The president of the Calabria region, Roberto Occhiuto, vowed to take action against such arsonists, adding that 22 suspected arsonists had been caught via drone surveillance last year. In the footage he released, the suspect can be seen in a woodland area, before throwing rocks at the drone.

Thank you for giving all your time and energy to restore the health of our warriors,” the video, shared on Mr Zelensky’s Facebook page, was captioned. “We highly respect you and are proud that we have such doctors. A fire on board a freight ship carrying nearly 3,000 cars was burning out of control in the North Sea on Wednesday 26 July, the Dutch coast guard said. One crew member died with several others injured, and officials are working to save the vessel from sinking close to an important habitat for migratory birds off the coast of Holland. Boats and helicopters were used to get the 23 crew members off the ship after they tried unsuccessfully to put out the blaze, the coast guard said in a statement.
