Greece fires - live: ‘Biggest evacuation in history’ as Jet2 and Tui scrap Rhodes flights
Greek authorities have issued fresh evacuation orders for parts of Corfu as dozens of wildfires erupted on the island after blaze in Rhodes prompted “the biggest evacuation in Greek history”. Videos on social media show flames engulfing Corfu as smoke and orange haze covered the night skies. The fire broke out on the northern part of the island which is popular with British tourists. Those in Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia Perithia and Sinies were told to evacuate to Kasiopi due to fires on Corfu. The order came after Jet2 and Tui cancelled all flights to Rhodes. The Jet2 planes were scheduled to depart full of tourists bound for the Greek island. But the planes left empty and will instead be used to evacuate holidaymakers fleeing the blaze. Thousands of tourists were forced to flee their hotels and images captured their dramatic evacuation off of beaches by a fleet of private boats while the fires raged in the background. Overnight, firefighters were struggling to contain 82 wildfires burning across the country, 64 of which started on Sunday, the hottest day of the summer so far. Carlee Russell – latest: Donors $63k money withheld despite abduction hoax claims
Carlee Russell – latest: Donors $63k money withheld despite abduction hoax claims
Crime Stoppers have walked back on their promise to return donors almost $63,000 even as Carlee Russel returned home by herself following her claimed 13 July abduction. Ms Russell, 25, told police she was kidnapped after stopping to help a toddler in diapers who was walking alone on Interstate 459 on the evening of 13 July. She came back home two days after the alleged abduction. More than $63,000 were raised during the two-day search for the Alabama woman. But the organisation that offers anonymous tips about criminal activity now said the money will not be returned after initially making the promise. “This investigation is still ongoing, and accordingly, there is no basis to refund any contributions at this time,” Crime Stoppers said. Meanwhile, Alabama police have expressed doubt over Ms Russell’s abduction claims and revealed she appeared to have made suspicious internet searches about kidnappings prior to the incident. Her friend has pleaded with the public to stop cyberbullying Ms Russell. Ukraine war – live: Russia says Kyiv’s ‘terrorist’ drone attack on Moscow thwarted
Ukraine war – live: Russia says Kyiv’s ‘terrorist’ drone attack on Moscow thwarted
The Russian defence ministry has claimed two Ukraine-launched drones for attacking Moscow have been intercepted and destroyed in the early hours today amid reports that drone fragments were found two km (1.2 miles) away from the ministry’s building. The defence ministry accused Ukraine for a “terrorist attack” but said there were no casualties in the attack. Two non-residential buildings were also struck during the attack, mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin said. Officials have closed the traffic on Komsomolsky Avenue as well as on Likhachev Avenue in Moscow’s south where a high-rise office building was struck, according to state news reports. Kyiv has not confirmed the Russian reports on drone attacks. Kyiv does not claim responsibility for operations on Russian soil, stating that the foreign invading nation is not its target. This comes just hours after at least one person was killed after a Russian missile struck Ukraine’s southern port of Odesa as it severely damaged an Orthodox cathedral in the city centre, a Unesco world heritage site. Another 20 were injured in the attack on the civilian infrastructure.
