COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS: Honoring the life of Britney Romero, a Texas A&M University freshman who died after falling from a dormitory balcony, a candlelight vigil was held on Thursday, October 20.

At around 9.30 pm, the 18-year-old girl's family, friends, and students of the university gathered at Aggie Park for the vigil, reports People.

What happened to Britney Romero?

According to a statement issued by the Division of Student Affairs of Texas A&M, Romero reportedly "fell from a third-floor balcony at Dunn Hall" on Sunday, October 15.

The Mexican Student Association (MSA) of the university also confirmed that the teenager who was one of its members have died.

"Britney Romero was a bright and kind freshman here at Texas A&M. From the very first MSA event that Britney came out to she made an impact on not only members but officers as well," read the association's tribute on social media.

"Heaven has gained another angel," they wrote.

Britney Romero remembered as a 'very bright person'

In honor of Romero, many people who gathered at the vigil on Thursday, October 19, donned pink clothing.

According to CBS affiliate KHOU-TV, pink balloons were also released into the air at the event.

Martin Sanchez, graduate and current MSA member described the teenager as a "very bright person."

"Her first semester she brought this energy that a lot of people just have that she possessed illuminating a room she'd walk into," he added.

What led Britney Romero to go over the edge of balcony?

According to the Division of Student Affairs, law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the reason behind Romero going over the edge of the dormitory balcony.

Fabian Gonzalez, MSA president expressed his dibelief and stated that it would have been out of character for Romero to willingly do something like this.

"She was not that type of person, someone to do something like that," said Gonzalez.

A "thorough and comprehensive review" of the fatal incident will be conducted by Texas A&M, stated Division of Student Affairs.

"We want to emphasize that Texas A&M University's top priority is our commitment to the well-being and safety of all our students," read their statement.

An autopsy into Romero's death has been ordered and an investigation is ongoing.

In the wake of the tragic incident, counseling has been made available to university students.

"We encourage our Aggie community to come together to support one another, as we always do at times like this, while also praying for and supporting the student’s family and all those grieving this tragic loss," stated Division of Student Affairs.
