Who was Albertha West? Woman killed with two family members in Brooklyn fire remembered as 'a legend' by neighbors

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: Three members of a Brooklyn family who lost their lives in a devastating Crown Heights fire in Brooklyn are being remembered fondly by neighbors.

The victims, Albertha West, 81, her son Michael West, 58, and her grandson, Jamiyl West, 33, were not just residents of their brownstone but cherished members of the neighborhood.

Jason Thompson, 44, a resident living adjacent to the West family for many years, offered heartfelt recollections and reflected on the significant influence they had on the community.

How did the tragic Crown Heights fire unfold?

The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning, November 12, at 242 Albany Avenue in Crown Heights. The fire, which quickly engulfed the building's three floors, was reported around 4:30 am and drew a significant response from firefighters. Despite their heroic efforts, the blaze claimed the lives of the West family members.

They were pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital, while at least one firefighter was taken to the hospital with injuries that, while serious, were fortunately not life-threatening.

Neighborhood shattered by the tragic loss of Good Samaritans

Thompson awoke to the acrid smell of smoke seeping through his exposed brick walls. Acting swiftly, he ensured the safety of his wife and four children, guiding them to safety. However, his relief was soon overshadowed by the heartbreaking news of the West family's loss.

The Wests had been an integral part of the neighborhood since the 1970s when they relocated from South Carolina. They welcomed Thompson and his family when they moved to New York from Grenada, forming deep bonds with their neighbors.

Recalling his recent conversation with Michael West, who had shared the news of his brother's death due to a heart attack, Thompson expressed his disbelief at the family's tragic turn of events. “I’m at a loss for words. I’m still reeling,” reported The New York Times.

West, the matriarch of the family, was known for her Sunday church visits and hospitality during holidays, where backyard barbecues were a cherished tradition.

She always set aside one of her delicious burgers for Thompson, demonstrating the family's warmth and generosity.

“She’s a legend,” he claimed. “She’s always there. She’s strong. This is one of the worst days of my life,” he added.
