Where is Tylar Michaud? Search for missing lobsterman, 18, called off after empty boat found near Maine coast

STEUBEN, MAINE: A heartfelt search operation by the US Coast Guard and local authorities, spanning over 40 hours, has yet to locate 18-year-old Tylar Michaud, a young lobsterman from New England. The search began after Michaud's fishing vessel, named 'Top Gun,' was discovered empty near Jonesport, Maine, on Friday, July 21.

Despite the extensive efforts of search crews, the dense fog on Saturday hampered their progress, leading to the suspension of the search on Sunday, pending any further developments. A local fisherman found his boat empty in the same vicinity later that night, triggering an immediate and concerted search effort.

Wher is Tylar Michaud?

Michaud, hailing from Steuben, was reported missing on Friday evening when he failed to return home after a day of hauling and setting his traps near Petit Manan Point. More than two dozen local fishermen, as well as assets from the Maine National Guard, Forest Rangers, and private pilots, joined in the search, focusing on the waters and shoreline around Petit Manan Point.

"The first night when we got the call, there was probably 25 fisherman that went out and hauled through his gear to figure out where he may have been," Maine Marine Patrol Sgt. Sean Dow said, adding that the support and outreach from the community have been remarkable. The close-knit community rallied together during this challenging time, with local fishermen aiding the search by checking Michaud's traps and cell phone records to help narrow down the search area.

'Tylar touched the lives of many within our close-knit community!'

Michaud, who recently graduated from Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan, left a lasting impact on his fellow students, teachers, and staff. Principal Jackson Green praised Michaud's exceptional qualities, describing him as a "compassionate and kind-hearted individual." "During his time at Sumner, Tylar touched the lives of many within our close-knit community. He was not only an exceptional student but also a compassionate, kind-hearted individual who always went above and beyond to lend a helping hand to others," Green said.

"His smile and unwavering positivity brightened the lives of everyone he encountered, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts of teachers, staff, and fellow students alike." In light of this tragic situation, the school is providing necessary support and counseling services for students, staff, and community members. Mental health experts will be available at Sumner Learning Campus, offering one-on-one sessions and group discussions on Monday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 pm to help everyone cope during this difficult period.

"At Sumner, we are committed to standing by one another, helping those who are struggling, and finding ways to cherish the memories of our beloved Tylar," Green wrote. "Together, we will navigate through this painful time and emerge stronger, knowing that our community stands united in grief and love. The Michaud/Kennedy remains in our thoughts and prayers," he added.
