Ukraine Recap: Zelenskiy Rallies G-7 as Russia Moves on Bakhmut

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy suggested his country was losing control of Bakhmut after months of fierce fighting in the eastern city.

He met with leaders from the Group of Seven nations in Japan over the weekend — though there was tension over Brazil’s discomfort at seeing him there. At a news conference he was asked directly if Bakhmut was still in Ukraine’s hands. His answer: “I think no.”

Zelenskiy’s mission was to rally support ahead of a widely anticipated counteroffensive. He was able to leave having secured US President Joe Biden’s nod to receive F-16 fighter jets — though the timing is unclear as well as which countries will provide them.
