LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Fans of ‘Friends’ star Matthew Perry believe that he was sending “bat-signals” when he went on a Batman-filled posting spree in days leading to his untimely death.
The 54-year-old, best known for playing Chandler Bing in the hit '90s show, allegedly died of an apparent drowning at his Pacific Palisades home on Saturday, October 28.
A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson confirmed first responders were called to Perry’s home in Pacific Palisades about a “water emergency.”
Perry’s cause of death is still unknown but authorities confirmed that there were no indications of foul play. An autopsy has been conducted, but examiners are awaiting the results of toxicology reports in order to determine the cause of death.
Matthew Perry’s Batman-inspired social media posts
In the days leading to his tragic death, Perry uploaded a series of posts on his Instagram account, portraying his obsession with the popular character Batman, a young, broken man who used the loss of his parents as a catalyst to become a crime-fighting vigilante with a strong sense of justice to aid others.
Despite suffering severe mental health issues, Batman used his suffering to become superhuman and save others. Perry frequently stated that he attempted to do the same when he opened up about his struggle with addiction.
In his first Batman-themed post, the ‘Three to Tango’ star shared a video with the camera panning across a darkened room, showing three screens with Batman on it along with stars projected onto the ceiling.
Towards the conclusion of the footage, the iconic Batman symbol is seen glowing red when the camera pans into a ceiling corner. "No need to worry everybody, I've got the streets tonight,” Perry captioned the post.
The post was followed by another image of a huge bat logo emblazoned on a wall with red lights. The post's caption read, "Sleep well everybody, I've got the city tonight -Mattman." "Mattman" is an amalgamation of his first name, Matthew, and Batman.
In the third photo, Perry posted an image of a light on a wall in the shape of a bat that said, "Batman plays pickleball," and captioned it, "WTF?" "Rest easy. I'm on a tall building," he commented on the same post.
He also posted a video of three red berries, writing, "This is what I've had to eat today. I'm Mattman," followed by a pumpkin carved with the Batman logo on the same day, writing, "Do you know what I mean?"
He also posted a video of the moon with darkness and fog surrounding it, and wrote, "Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you? - I'm Mattman."
In his farewell public image, he once more went by Mattman and posted a photo of himself in a nighttime pool with a half-moon in the background. The caption read, "Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I'm Mattman."
Matthew Perry’s posts sparked health concerns
Perry’s posts initially appeared fun and cool to his fans but they soon began expressing concerns over his well-being.
"I hope everything’s ok with you my friend," one fan said while another commented, "Just checking [you're] ok? Big hug from Ireland."
Someone commented, "Are you okay, should we send for help?" beneath a video he posted of the moon six days ago.
“So Matt, you do know there are a few of us who are a little concerned about you right now?” a third fan wrote beneath another of Perry's posts from this week in which he carved the Batman symbol into a pumpkin.
“'I am hoping you're just having a little silly fun or you're hinting at a new project. Your fans adore you and want you to be happy and healthy - please take care of yourself. Thanks,” they continued according to Daily Mail.
"Seeing this after he passed and the signs were definitely there, rip Mr. Bing,” a fourth person mourned.
"I really feel something is wrong with this video. Again, the hand does not seem right to me. Maybe I just have to [sic] much solitude this weekend. I’ve watched it so many times and it’s a creepy hand/nails. And noises. And again, no disrespect. Truly,” one more said, as per Blast.
