Sheriff’s deputy fired and arrested for leaving his baby girl in hot car for three hours
A sheriff’s deputy in Texas who left his infant child in a hot car for three hours has been fired and arrested. Antonio Almaraz, 31, left his two-month-old baby alone in his car on Monday, as temperatures in San Antonio reached around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Mr Almaraz had taken his child to a routine pediatrics appointment at 9am. He returned home an hour later and left his child in the car parked outside. At about 1pm, the baby was found unresponsive in the car. She was rushed to Methodist Hospital and their condition remains critical. The hospital reported the incident to authorities, but according to the sheriff’s office, Mr Almazaz initially gave a different narrative when he was questioned about what happened. Mr Almaraz had been charged with injury to a child, endangering a child and abandoning a child, with a bail set at $80,000. The deputy had only started his job in February and has now since been fired due to the treatment of his child. He will not be allowed to appeal his dismissal nor be eligible for rehire, no matter what the outcome of his case is, the sheriff’s office said. “Given the amount of awareness in the community regarding leaving children unattended in vehicles, there is absolutely no valid excuse for this to have occurred,” Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a statement. “My family and I are praying for the best possible outcome for this precious baby.” The inside of a vehicle can increase over 20 degrees within ten minutes, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states. It was only in late July that another infant was stuck in a hot car in San Antonio, Texas. Texas mall gunman carried eight firearms to mass shooting, police confirm
The gunman who killed eight people and injured seven others at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas brought eight weapons with him, police confirmed in a press conference. Mauricio Garcia, 33, the man law enforcement identified as the gunman, used an AR-15-style rifle to carry out the mass shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets on Saturday (6 May). But according to police, Garcia had seven additional weapons. “He had eight weapons with him,” Hank Sibley, the regional director of the Texas Department of Safety said on Tuesday. Mr Sibley said three of the eight were carried on Garcia while five remained in the vehicle he drove to the outlet. All eight were legally obtained by the gunman, Mr Sibley confirmed the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms ran traces on all of the weapons. Garcia used one of his weapons to shoot and kill eight people, three of which were young children, and injure seven others. The victims are 20-year-old Christian LaCour, 26-year-old Aishwarya Thatikonda, 37-year-old Kyu Song Cho, 35-year-old Cindy Cho, three-year-old James Cho, 11-year-old Daniela Mendoza, 8-year-old Sofia Mendoza and 32-year-old Elio Cumana-Rivas. Law enforcement said the shooting only lasted between three to four minutes before a police officer subdued the gunman. Mr Sibley said the motive of the gunman was still unknown though law enforcement indicated Garcia had “neo-Nazi ideation”. Garcia was found at the shooting bearing patches that said “RWDS,” an acronym for “Right Wing Death Squad.” The acronym is associated with far-right groups such as The Proud Boys. An online profile on the Russian website ok.ru that seemed to have belonged to Garcia also included posts from the gunman that had photos of the Allen Premium Outlets mall and location information that showed when the mall was at its busiest. Posts reviewed by The Independent included praise for Adolf Hitler, photos showing SS, incel-like ideas and complaints about the state of his mental health. Pensioner charged with murder of 11-year-old British girl in France
A man has been formally charged with the murder of an 11-year-old British girl who was shot dead in Brittany, France on Saturday evening. Dirk Raats, 71, spoke briefly on Monday evening as he was formally charged with the murder of Solaine Thornton, 11, and the attempted murders of her parents Adrian and Rachael Thornton, 52 and 49 respectively. Solaine Thornton died after she was allegedly shot while playing on swings in the garden of her home in France. The couple’s younger daughter, Celeste, eight, managed to get away unscathed to raise the alarm in the Brittany hamlet of Saint-Herbot, near Quimper. Officials have since said Solaine was “not the target” of a fatal gunshot which killed her outside her home in France. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, public prosecutor Camille Miansoni said: “It would seem that he was not aiming at the little girl.” On Monday, Mr Raats was taken from a secure police station for a 10-minute appearance before a judge at Brest Criminal Court. Speaking in court, he said: “It’s so horrible what happened. I don’t understand,” after judges confirmed a test showed he was ‘on drugs’ on Saturday. The court heard that Mr Raats had worked as a photographer, shepherd and career for the handicapped before retiring to France some five years ago. Anne Guillerme, his defence barrister, said he had “no criminal record” and may have psychiatric problems. However, an evaluation performed since Mr Raats’s arrest showed there is no evidence he is “unhinged”, the public prosecutor said. Mr Raats was remanded in custody following the charges, and could spend the rest of his life in prison if found guilty at trial. The 71-year-old’s wife, who was named as Marlene van Hook, also in her 70s, was meanwhile being questioned on suspicion of concealing a weapon. Miansoni confirmed both Mr Raats and his wife “tested positive for alcohol and cannabis” at the time of their arrest. The two sets of near neighbours had been involved in a dispute dating back at least three years. Mr Raats had reportedly been in a “conflict” with the family over a plot of land beside their properties for “several years”, state prosecutor Carine Halley said. Meanwhile, a resident claimed Mr Raats regularly complained about the family cutting down trees to make way for children’s play equipment, including swings. “He was also regularly upset about the noise the family made, even though it didn’t bother anyone else – it was mainly just kids having a nice time,” the resident said. Ms Halley explained initial evidence suggests the suspect “retreated” to his house where he barricaded himself in with his wife after shooting at the family. The Intervention Group of the National Gendarmerie tactical unit was called to the scene, and a negotiator persuaded the couple to give themselves up. They were then arrested. Solaine’s grandfather, Irvin Thornton, reportedly told the Sun newspaper “she didn’t stand a chance”. He said his son, Adrian, is in a coma.
